WAHI KŪPUNA INTERNSHIP PROGRAM HŌʻIKE
The Hōʻike features presentations by the 7 Kanaka ʻŌiwi haumāna on their individual and original research projects. Through a range of ethnohistorical and ethnographic research methods, the haumāna gained an intimate pilina to their project wahi and are excited to share their research outcomes and experiences.
Their projects span a range of wahi and ʻāina based topics including:
- ʻAʻohe uʻi hele wale of Kohala - An inventory of inoa ʻāina, genealogies of land management, agricultural resources and cultural infrastructure within a portion of land in the Honomakaʻu and Kapuʻa ahupuaʻa.
- A Kingʻs Journey to Safety - a story map that explores the intimate relationship between Kamehameha's birth during the ruling of Alapaʻinui and nine traditional inoa ʻāina of Kohala
- He Leo Wale Nou E - A Compiled Oral Histories of Kohala Kuaʻāina and a return to ʻĀina-based forms of Education
- Kukuipahu - A Research Inventory of Kukuipahu Heiau
- The Tradition of Remembering - Ethnographic Interviews with Kamaʻāina about the area of Hōkūʻula in the Ahupuaʻa of Lālāmilo
- Pūlama Kaʻauhuhu - Researching Mahele documents, maps, and nūpepa in the Ahupuaʻa Kaʻauhuhu to learn about the (different) kīhapai, hale, and inoa āina of this ʻāpana within what is know known as the Hāwī town area today.
- Cultivating Traditional Knowledge of Agricultural Systems in Kohala- Focuses on Kohala I Waho or “Leeward” Kohala and just one example of Lālāmilo of Waimea. From this examination, we learn Kohala provides many examples of cultivation where agricultural methods are exceptionally more diverse.
Throughout the internship, the haumāna focused on the theme of resilience and how the resilience and steadfastness of our kūpuna from Kohala can teach us much about how to be resilient and thriving kānaka today.
